Two tragedies of different scales have been brought to my attention this morning.
1. My beloved housemate Claire has a long-time friend of the family who is like a second mom to ehr back in Texas and this friend's daughter committed suicide last night.
2. London has experienced a terrorist attack coinciding with the unbelivably important G8 Summit to overcome poverty for developing nations. Peopel died and many many more people are angry and afraid. Prime Minister Blair is using language about clashing of civilizations that is dangerous. Yet stories say that the al-Queda gave a statement claiming responsibility, so...what is going on? One hopeful thing is an immediate story in the London Times about interfaith statements of horror and solidarity:
I don't really know what to pray for. The world has such capacity for good (rich blessed nations bringing hundreds of thousands into a campaign to bring people up from poverty) and for evil (bombs in subways and threats of war). Who is God when these things happen? How does He speak to us when we are faced with terrible things? I don't know exactly. But I know Jesus is a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53)
